Botulinum Toxin Treatment
A prescription injectable used to soften the appearance of lines caused by facial movement.
What is it?
Botulinum toxin is an injectable prescription medicine that temporarily reduces the activity of specific facial muscles. It is most commonly used in areas where lines form through repeated expression, such as the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes. Because it is a prescription-only medicine, it can only be prescribed for you by a qualified independent prescriber after a face-to-face assessment.
What it is designed to address
- The appearance of lines that form through facial movement
- Forehead lines, frown lines and lines around the eyes
- Excessive sweating in some cases, where clinically appropriate
What happens at your appointment
Your appointment begins with a face-to-face consultation with your prescriber. She will take a full medical history, discuss what you are hoping to achieve, examine the area, and explain what is and is not realistic. If treatment is clinically appropriate and you wish to go ahead, you will give written consent and the treatment is carried out in the same visit.
Results
Any effect develops gradually over the days following treatment rather than immediately, and it is temporary. How long it lasts varies considerably from person to person. A review appointment is usually arranged so your clinician can assess how you have responded.
Aftercare
You will be given a written aftercare plan before you leave, specific to the treatment you have had. As a general principle, avoid heat, strenuous exercise, alcohol and make-up on the treated area for the period your clinician specifies, protect the area from the sun, and contact the clinic if anything concerns you.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, always. This is a prescription-only medicine and UK law requires a face-to-face assessment by a qualified prescriber before it can be prescribed for you. The consultation takes place at the start of your appointment.
No. There are medical conditions, medications and circumstances — including pregnancy and breastfeeding — that make this treatment unsuitable. Your prescriber will go through your full medical history and will tell you if it is not appropriate for you.
The aim is a natural, unforced result. Your clinician will discuss what you are hoping for and explain what is realistically achievable for your face before anything goes ahead.
Yes — for every treatment, without exception. Your appointment begins with a face-to-face consultation with your prescriber, who will take your medical history, examine the area and confirm whether the treatment is appropriate for you. Treatment follows in the same visit if it is.
We will tell you, and explain why. Your clinician may suggest a different approach, or advise against treatment altogether. You will never be treated with something that is not clinically appropriate for you.
